How can the business be involved? Why is this relevant to business?

Experts unanimously agree that without participation of business the achievement of these objectives will be impossible. Contribution to these objectives is a social mission of every company which aims at successful business. There are certainly a lot of reasons for that:

  • new business opportunities open up for those who take a creative approach to global ecological, social and economic challenges;
  • clients (in particular, the younger generation) increasingly more often consider corporate sustainability and social responsibility when choosing products and services;
  • investors much more favourably evaluate companies that pursue sustainability values;
  • employees better appreciate the employers whose values they approve of and with whom they can do meaningful positive things;
  • states have already started amending their legislation and applying more favourable conditions to businesses that operate in a sustainable and responsible manner.

How to start?

Firstly, you have to become acquainted with these objectives in order to understand which one are the most relevant to your company. Not all 17 objectives will be equally important for your activities.

The first task is to assess the areas in which your company’s activities have the highest impact. Consider not only the activities you perform, but also your suppliers, the production process, and other related operations. This will help you identify the areas in which you can increase a positive impact and those in which you can reduce or eliminate a negative impact.

The key issue is to assess the following several aspects:

  • In which areas does your company have a potential negative (direct or indirect) impact? It may be environmental pollution, plastic packaging of products, CO2 emissions due to transportation of products or parts thereof from distant countries, etc.
  • What are your company’s competences and technological possibilities that could enable a positive contribution to one or several objectives? Maybe you can help create more sustainable products, contribute to youth education, or encourage your clients to change their habits.

Define your goals

Defining specific and measurable sustainability goals helps establish general priorities of the entire organisation and rally employees and clients for a common goal. In addition, you will not only be able to set more meaningful business goals, but also to more efficiently communicate your socially responsible business.

Environmental goals may be connected to carbon emissions, waste, energy and water consumption, as well as the exploitation of other natural resources. Social goals are related to education, equal opportunities, reduction of exclusion, and combatting corruption.

Most importantly, keep in mind that all efforts are valuable, and you can start with little things.

Community business – a new way to create a work place?

The participants of the seminar together with Jūratė Cvilikienė – the discussion moderator and the head of the Institute of Finances, shared their insights about businesses of rural communities. The guests of the Internet seminar agreed that rural communities’ businesses in Lithuania are only at the initial stage of their development as compared with the situation in Western European countries. Part of initiatives are impeded by financing covering only 70-80% of the project value.
