"Hansabankas" is the first bank in Lithuania exclusively relying on safe microchip technology-based electronic card readers (ECR) installed in sale and service enterprises. Implementation of microchip technologies by "Hansabankas" started two years ago. In summer of 2003, the Bank was the first in Lithuania to issue microchip "VISA" cards in line with international standards and to install the first microchip-based ECR. In the beginning of November this year, all ECR of "Hansabankas" were provided with microchips.
From now on all shops, restaurants, hotels and other service enterprises who have signed agreements with "Hansabankas" use safe and reliable card maintenance method. Microchip-based ECR guarantee maximum safety of settlement with microchip cards, because the cardholder has to enter the PIN code of the card instead of signing the cheque.
"Implementation of microchip technologies in Lithuania is good news to our customers. To make card settlements more convenient, we have already started offering to our customers special ECR intended for restaurants. Customers will be able to settle using card, entering their PIN code right at the table. They will not need to give their card to the waiter and go to the bar to enter the PIN code "- said Vitalij Rancev, Director of "Hansabankas" Payment Cards Department.
In the nearest future "Hansabankas" together with other Lithuanian banks is planning to initiate implementation of microchip technologies in ECR integrated in cash registers.
By end-October "Hansabankas" has issued over 1 million payment cards, with microchip cards accounting for 71 per cent. At present "Hansabankas" has already provided with microchips all "VISA" cards issued by it and also envisages issuing "MasterCard" microchip cards.
"Hansabankas" occupies leading position in payment cards market, and by the end of third quarter of this year managed 33,4 per cent of the Lithuanian card market.
